Academic Advising:
Academic advising is a core element of university education, as it provides students with a wide range of resources and support. The academic advising process serves as the primary guidance throughout a student's university journey.
Tasks:
Preparing new female students for the university stage.
Helping female students make appropriate decisions related to their academic and professional future.
Improving the student's achievement level by directing her according to the approved academic plan to obtain the academic degree.
Overcoming the difficulties that the student may encounter during her studies and providing advice in all areas that may affect her educational path.
Monitoring female students throughout their studies, particularly those experiencing academic difficulties, identifying the underlying causes of their failure, and implementing strategies to enhance their academic performance.
The Role of The Student in Academic Advising:
Female students play an essential role in the academic advising process. They are responsible for monitoring their academic progress and seeking advice and guidance from academic advisors. Students can make the most of academic advising by following these steps:
- Before meeting with the academic advisor:
- Knowing the office hours of the academic advisor.
- Scheduling an appointment with the academic advisor at the beginning of the semester, preferably with follow-up meetings at least once a month.
- Preparing the student's questions and concerns to be presented in the academic meeting.
- Reviewing the study plan carefully, which outlines the requirements of the department, college, and university.
- Searching for the accurate information and data related to what the student needs before meeting her academic advisor.
- During the academic advisor meeting:
- Clarifying the student's professional and academic goals and discussing them transparently with the academic advisor.
- Setting a graduation date and consulting with the academic advisor.
- Collaborating with the academic advisor to develop a study plan, including a course schedule outlining the student's intended courses for the next two semesters.
- Asking all questions that concern the student's interest to her academic advisor, as she is better able to assist when she has a clear understanding of the student's thoughts and concerns.
- Follow-up meetings:
- Following the recommendations of the academic advisor.
- Communicating with the advisor and sending an email for any additional questions or inquiries.
- Reviewing the graduation requirements and ensuring full understanding.
- Informing the academic advisor when undertaking any academic process (such as drop, add, withdrawal, deferral, etc.).
- The student is responsible for her academic progress. Advice and guidance are important tools to support her success, but she remains primarily responsible for her own achievements.
