The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University organized today, Monday, December 8, 2025, an event titled “History of Handicrafts… Authenticity and Sustainability,” as part of its participation in activating the Year of Handicrafts 2025. The event aimed to highlight traditional Saudi crafts and revive their presence in society, and it was held at the university’s Conference and Seminar Center. The program included a panel discussion that shed light on the development of Saudi handicrafts, their cultural role, and methods for preserving and developing them in a way that enhances their sustainability for future generations. A number of specialists in the field of handicrafts participated in the session. The event also featured the discussion of several research papers presented by experts on diverse topics related to handicrafts, including “The Craft of Incense Burners: Between History and Heritage,” “Developing Handicrafts and Directing Them to Attract the Younger Generation,” “Innovation and Digitalization in Preserving and Developing Handicrafts,” and “Rock Arts and Their Impact on Handicrafts.” The event also included around five workshops that combined theoretical and practical aspects, offering educational and interactive experiences for attendees. The workshops covered topics such as “Empowering Women and Youth Through Handicrafts,” “Designing Handicraft Products with a Contemporary Vision,” and “Handicrafts: Between Authenticity and Sustainability,” in addition to hands-on workshops on wood decorations and mud building. These activities allowed participants to engage in practical experiences that reflected the stages of practicing traditional crafts, enhancing appreciation for their historical and aesthetic value. The event showcased a variety of handicraft booths that served as vibrant spaces introducing visitors to the techniques of producing traditional crafts and the details of their practice. These included booths for pottery and metalworks, jewelry and ornaments, traditional construction, textile crafts, wooden pieces, palm crafts, and leatherworks, along with a booth displaying students’ handicraft creations and a dedicated children’s booth offering educational experiences inspired by traditional crafts. Specialized entities concerned with heritage preservation and the support of national handicraft sustainability also participated through visual and documentary content. It is worth noting that organizing this event comes as part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ efforts to support and promote innovation and creativity in the field of handicrafts, and to contribute to achieving the goals of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University’s 2025 strategic plan. This is accomplished through preserving heritage, developing handicrafts, and sustaining their presence by means of educational and cultural programs that strengthen the connection between generations and the world of traditional crafts.
