King Abdullah University Hospital Performs Knee Replacement Surgery Using a Surgical Robot

Using surgical robot technology, the medical team at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University successfully performed a same-day knee replacement surgery for a patient in his sixties who was suffering from Grade 4 osteoarthritis in the knee joint. The surgery was completed successfully and lasted one full hour. During the procedure, the patient received spinal anesthesia. He regained the ability to walk two hours after the operation, and was discharged from the hospital five hours later. Dr. Bandar bin Abdullah Al-Obrah, Consultant Orthopedic and Joint Surgeon at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital, explained that same-day knee joint surgeries rely on the use of surgical robot technology (“automated device”) as an advanced surgical technique compared to traditional operations. It is characterized by reducing hospitalization time and lowering the likelihood of side complications, and it also helps patients regain mobility as soon as possible. It is worth noting that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital has performed more than 100 knee and hip joint replacement cases using surgical robot technology, reflecting the University hospital’s efforts to enhance the quality of practices and procedures and to achieve the highest levels of healthcare.
