The College of Computer and Information Sciences at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University achieved second place in the “Environmental Public Speaking Competition for Colleges and Universities,” in its 25th edition, organized by the Emirates Environmental Group in Dubai. The college’s win came through the participation of several female students presenting an innovative environmental initiative titled “Baseer,” under the theme “Sustainable Thinking: How Does Artificial Intelligence Impact Environmental Solutions?” The initiative employed artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technologies to provide effective solutions for waste sorting, showcasing a creative innovation that highlights the issue of pollution and ways to reduce it, while also enhancing students’ public speaking, presentation, and scientific communication skills. Dr. Manal Al-Ouhali, Dean of the College of Computer and Information Sciences, explained that “the students’ participation in such regional competitions reflects the college’s commitment to supporting its students, strengthening their presence in innovation platforms, and aligning with its educational mission—while advancing their path toward excellence locally and internationally.” This year’s Environmental Public Speaking Competition centers on four main themes: Two Interlinked Crises: Climate Change and Biodiversity, and How to Address Them, Urbanization or Well-Being? The Role of Sustainable Cities in Public Health, Sustainable Thinking: How Artificial Intelligence Impacts Environmental Solutions, and The Environmental and Economic Footprint of Cosmetics and the Clothing Industry. It is worth noting that the participation of the College of Computer and Information Sciences in the “Environmental Public Speaking Competition for Colleges and Universities” comes as part of the college’s initiatives to contribute to achieving the goals of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University’s Strategic Plan 2025. This includes strengthening academic and research excellence, encouraging students to participate in international forums, promoting women’s leadership in the development journey, and empowering their engagement in regional and global platforms.
