The College of Sciences at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University is participating in the exhibition accompanying the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), which continues until 13 December 2024. The participation aims to represent the university and highlight its environmental efforts, including environmental initiatives and the research achievements of its affiliates. The college is participating through an exhibition pavilion showcasing its facilities and units that support environmental knowledge and scientific research, including the Herbarium, which serves as a comprehensive library containing documentation and records of plant information that supports research studies and scientific classification, as well as the Greenhouse, which supports the practical components of many biology courses and is used to cultivate plants for graduation projects as a model for modern agricultural technologies and environmental sustainability. The college pavilion also enables visitors and those interested to review key scientific outputs of university affiliates in the environmental field, in addition to browsing the Biodiversity Research Journal supervised by the Department of Biology, which includes numerous applied research studies. The Dean of the College of Sciences, Dr. Falwah bint Thaqfan, explained that the college’s participation in COP16 comes as part of its efforts to raise community awareness of environmental issues, promote individual and collective responsibility for environmental protection, and contribute to finding solutions for rehabilitating vegetation cover. She also highlighted the negative impacts of land degradation and desertification, such as increased pollution, loss of biodiversity, and soil deterioration, in addition to other environmental risks that directly affect humans and other living organisms. This participation reflects Princess Nourah University’s ongoing environmental efforts and its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It also highlights the College of Sciences’ role in fulfilling the objectives of the University’s Strategic Plan 2025, by providing a healthy, integrated educational environment, strengthening links with the local and global community, and showcasing the civilizational role of Saudi women in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. The 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16) represents a major international event bringing together member states, environmental organizations, and stakeholders to discuss global efforts to combat desertification and land degradation.
