Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, represented by the Community Responsibility and Partnerships Department, will launch a community initiative titled “Sa‘f wa Shaghaf” from Sunday, September 15 through September 18, 2024, to reinvest palm frond waste resulting from pruning more than 14,000 palm trees on campus. The initiative aims to recycle palm fronds within the university city—a process that takes place twice each year—by adopting smart solutions to utilize the waste and transform it into high-quality handicrafts through an intensive training program that qualifies trainees to master palm-frond craftsmanship. This contributes to sustainable development and reduces environmental harm. The initiative is based on a sustainability approach in recycling knowledge and in spreading and reinforcing positive environmental concepts among University affiliates and the local community. It will be implemented during morning and evening sessions, contributing to motivating participants to establish pioneering heritage-based business projects, preserve and modernize traditional handicrafts, and enhance their creative and innovative capacities to create sustainable solutions in development fields. The initiative includes several theoretical activities aimed at enhancing environmental awareness and elevating it into sustainable behaviors regarding the importance of recycling to produce high-quality products. It also offers a package of professional training workshops to teach palm-frond shaping and the manufacture of innovative and modern products, delivered by specialized Saudi artisans, targeting those interested in learning traditional handicrafts from the University and the broader community. Alongside the practical component, environmental awareness and recycling activities will be launched, and an exhibition will be held to display products, including adding artistic drawings to the products, designing product concepts, and demonstrating how to finalize and produce innovative palm-frond crafts. The Director of the General Department of Institutional Communication at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Ms. Amal bint Ibrahim Al-Hawas, stated: “The initiative is based on a sustainability approach in recycling skills by training a group of passionate women in renewing heritage and qualifying them appropriately to enable them to transfer knowledge to other groups.” Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of Saudi Vision 2030, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is accelerating continuous efforts to achieve leadership in activating the Sustainable Development Goals, including environmental protection as a national strategy that enhances quality of life for a sustainable future that strengthens the vitality and prosperity of society and extends to the world.
