A team of students from the Applied College at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University won first place in the “Innovation Challenge for Sustainability 2024” competition organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, with the participation of 139 teams from various universities in the Kingdom. The team was awarded first place in the “Agricultural Pest Control” track for their innovative project titled “Early Warning System for Controlling Red Palm Weevil Using Artificial Intelligence,” presented by students: Lujain Al-Buraidi, Raghad Al-Ghamdi, Deema Al-Shaya’, and Jude Al-Yaqub, under the supervision of Applied College faculty member, Dr. Lubna Abdelkarim. The project proposes an intelligent system using artificial intelligence technologies for early detection and prediction of red palm weevil infestation. The system is distinguished by its integration of data from multiple sources, such as weather data, acoustic sensors, and drone imagery, to overcome the limitations of individual methods and enhance accuracy and performance. The system adopts a staged approach that begins with identifying high-risk areas through weather data analysis, followed by the use of acoustic sensors to detect insects, and finally employing deep learning techniques to analyze drone images of potentially infected trees, thus contributing to reducing costs. The “Innovation Challenge for Sustainability” competition aimed to attract creative minds from various disciplines to develop innovative solutions that address environmental challenges and support the achievement of sustainable development goals. The competition included three themes: Environment–Desertification, Water–Water Loss, and Agriculture–Agricultural Pests. The participation of Applied College students in this competition aligns with the strategic objectives of Princess Nourah University’s Strategic Plan 2025 to build bridges of communication with local and global communities, enhance knowledge and societal impact, and support the leadership role of its students, in line with Saudi Vision 2030’s goal of preparing a generation capable of confronting challenges and achieving sustainable development.
