On Monday, 8 December 2025, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University organized the event “History of Handicrafts: Authenticity and Sustainability” as part of its participation in the Year of Handicrafts 2025. The event aimed to showcase traditional Saudi crafts and revive their presence in society. It was held at the University’s Conference and Seminar Center. The program included a panel discussion that highlighted the development of Saudi handicrafts, their cultural significance, and methods for preserving and developing them in line with a vision to ensure their sustainability for future generations. The panel featured several specialists in the field of handicrafts and included discussions of academic papers on topics such as “Incense Crafting: History and Heritage”, “Developing Handicrafts and Guiding Them to Engage the Younger Generation”, “Innovation and Digitization in Preserving and Developing Handicrafts”, and “Rock Arts and Their Impact on Handicrafts.” The event offered approximately five workshops covering both theoretical and practical aspects, providing interactive learning experiences. Workshop topics included “Empowering Women and Youth Through Handicrafts”, “Designing Handicraft Products with a Contemporary Vision”, and “Handicrafts: Balancing Authenticity and Sustainability.” Practical sessions on wood decoration and clay building allowed participants to engage directly with traditional craft practices, enhancing appreciation of their historical and aesthetic value. Additionally, the event featured multiple interactive stations showcasing various handicrafts, including pottery and metalwork, jewelry, traditional construction, textiles, wooden crafts, palm-based products, and leatherwork. There were also stations highlighting student-made handicrafts and children’s activities inspired by traditional crafts, alongside contributions from specialized organizations working to protect heritage and support the sustainability of national crafts through visual and documentary content. This initiative is part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ efforts to foster innovation and creativity in handicrafts and to contribute to achieving Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University’s Strategic Plan 2025 by preserving heritage, developing handicrafts, and ensuring their sustainable presence through educational and cultural programs connecting generations to the field of handicrafts.
