Dr. Sameera Abuaish is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Basic Science at the College of Medicine at Princess Nourah Bint Adulrahman University. She studies how different early-life environments affect different aspects of neurobiology (behaviour, physiology, and molecular biology) in individual in both rodent models and humans. She did her postdoctoral training with the Perinatal Pathway lab at Columbia University in New York under the supervision of Dr. Catherine Monk, where she explored the effects of maternal obesity on mother and child outcomes. She examined the autonomic nervous system development during in-utero life and postnatal behavioral outcomes in addition to inflammatory biomarkers in mothers and its association with peripatum depression and the underlying epigenetic signature. She has obtained her PhD degree in Cell and Systems Biology from the University of Toronto in Canada. During that time she was a member in Dr. Patrick McGowan’s laboratory studying the effects of maternal obesity and stress on offspring anxiety behavior, neuroendocrinology, and epigenetics. Previously, she completed her MSc. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from the University of Ottawa, where she was a member in Dr. David Park’s laboratory working on identifying genetic interactors of one of Parkinson’s disease genes (LRRK2), using a Drosophila melanogaster genetic screen. She graduated Cum Lauda from the University of Ottawa with a Bacholar’s degree with Honors in Biology with specialization in cellular and molecular biology with a minor in Psychology. Througout her education she was keen to understand how the brain works in health and disease using different animal models. She continous to explore this further in her research
