This course introduces students to major figures of literature in the Arab world. The works studied in this course are of different genres and are all written in Arabic but translated into English. Students of English literature will study these works in Arabic or as translations. The course is intended to enrich the students’ background about the literature and culture of their own mother tongue. Moreover, it familiarizes them with trends and developments in modern Arabic literature. It also enables them to critically analyze and interpret the works of modern Arabic literature in light of modern literary issues and techniques in order to locate modern Arabic literary works within the broad cultural movement of modernism. Thus, it will provide students with more insights and a better understanding of their own culture and literature.
