وصف المقرر
This course introduces students to some selected novels written in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries successively by renowned literary icons. The course is also intended to familiarize students with the different literary features and distinctive characteristics of both centuries, especially the concept of Western individualism, guiding students toward an appreciation of the genre as an art form. Western individualism was initiated in the 18th-century novel as a manifestation of the rationalism of the age, and was further developed in the 19th-century novel The course also sheds light on the tremendous cultural, social, political and historical factors that had influenced prose writing in both centuries, helping students understand the inevitable connection between literature and culture. Further, the course requires students to engage in literary analysis of chosen texts from a cultural perspective to highlight the fact that a profound analysis of literary texts requires basic knowledge of their cultural context.

وصف المقرر
Course Description Since many cinematic works are inspired by literary production, this course encourages students to explore the transitional process of a narrative between two distinctive media, literature and film. Based on their knowledge of literary form, students are encouraged in the course to record and analyze how a literary artefact is reshaped by the visual reproduction of that literary work. In each lecture, students are exposed to a close reading of both text and film in order to explore formal and cultural shifts generated through the process of adaptation taking into consideration the theories and rhetoric associated with the analysis of adaptation. They are also encouraged to observe how these shifts may differ in nature and degree from one adaptation to another by comparing and contrasting adaptations undertaken in each lecture to those discussed in previous lectures. This will help students in forming their arguments in their final project.
Taking into account the theoretical and contextual issues involved in the transition from text to film, students are encouraged to think about the broader issues involved within adaptation theory. These issues include, but are not limited to, issues of authorship between text and film, faithfulness to the original in translating a text into film, point of view, transformation of language from text to film, the nuances generated by cultural shifts in the context of both text and film, and how the use of technology might affect and reshape the message in the original text.
