This course will introduce students to leadership as a concept and as a practice. Definitions, competencies, and assumptions of leadership will be explained at the beginning of the semester. The practice of leadership will be maintained through a close reading of selected modern and ancient works of literature as a springboard to talk about the choices and dilemmas of leadership. It, then, will focus on the qualities, subtleties, ambiguities, and dilemmas of leadership as they appear in the eyes of leaders/observers of human nature. The course also considers ethical questions about leadership in different ages as well as its pragmatic value.
