King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University has saved a Saudi baby from obstruction of the oesophagus and deformities in the veins, as the third case of its kind globally. As a medical team made up of the Department of Paediatrics Surgery, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care for New-borns was able to perform this advanced and complex operation to repair the oesophagus of the girl child by connecting the non-formed part of the oesophagus.
The head of the surgery department, Dr. Mohammed al-Shehri, indicated that the scarcity of this case lies in the presence of large and expanding veins in the place of repair of the oesophagus, which were isolated. As the medical team was able to repair the oesophagus without entering the pulmonary cavity or causing damage to the child. It is worth noting that the operation of repairing of the oesophagus took four continuous hours, to feed the child after the operation in the natural way and is currently preparing to live among members of her family in a healthy manner.
It is noteworthy that this case recorded as the third one globally after monitoring only two similar cases, the first was in 2014 and the second was in 2016.
