Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, represented by the General Administration of Institutional Communication, launched the second phase of the “Sa‘af wa Shaghaf” summer camp from 7 to 10 July 2025. The camp aims to recycle discarded palm fronds into high-quality handcrafted products through a sustainable training program that qualifies trainees to master palm-frond crafting. The program was held at the University’s Conference and Seminar Center. The summer camp aims to spread and reinforce positive environmental concepts among University affiliates and members of the local community, encourage the launch of heritage-based entrepreneurial projects, preserve and develop traditional handicrafts, and promote creativity and innovation in recycling industries, contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals. The camp includes several theoretical activities aimed at enhancing environmental awareness, elevating it into sustainable behaviors, and highlighting the importance of investing in recycling to produce high-quality products. This is complemented by a package of practical workshops supervised by specialized Saudi artisans to teach palm-frond shaping techniques for producing innovative and modern products. The activities and workshops focus on several specialized topics, including collecting palm fronds from campus palm trees after pruning and trimming excess branches, drying the fronds under sunlight to facilitate shaping, designing product concepts and methods of presentation, including production processes and the addition of artistic drawings. The “Sa‘af wa Shaghaf” camp represents a community initiative that embodies Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University’s commitment to enhancing its social and environmental role in skills empowerment and reviving traditional crafts with a contemporary spirit, within an educational environment that stimulates innovation and supports resource sustainability, in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
