This course provides an introduction to Materials Science, focusing on the physical and mechanical properties of engineering materials, such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, through an understanding of atomic, molecular, crystalline, and microscopic structures of these materials. Further, this course has a strongly applied focus with industrial relevance since it allows students to understand how materials are strengthen or even fails and apply these concepts experimentally in the lab.
In addition, the students will be able to design heat treatments for steel alloys using MatCalc software.
At the end of the course, two weeks will be allocated to read and discuss what's new in materials science and metallurgy.
