This is a four-credit-hour course designed to furnish students with computer-based translational skills and machine translation (MT) approaches needed to deal with different types of text. One of the main objectives of the course is to enhance the students’ knowledge of computer programs and of the extent to which they can benefit by using such programs in different translation processes. This includes the knowledge of text processing programs, text inputting, text editing, automatic translation programs etc. Students are also to be trained in the usage of electronic dictionaries and surfing the Internet, and to recognize how far electronic dictionaries and computer skills can help the translators save their time and effort. Real texts from different branches of knowledge are to be translated in the laboratory/classroom where students will become familiar with this type of translation as well as with its associated technical problems.
